Ubuntu for Android Turns Your Phone Into a Desktop Computer

Cramming a desktop environment onto a smartphone is a fun project that promises very little actual usefulness. Smartphone screens are too small for desktop OSes, and connecting a keyboard and mouse is usually out of the question. But now Canonicals Ubuntu for Android takes a different approach, surfacing the desktop OS only when it actually makes sense.

Canonical announced today that it will seamlessly integrate Android with the Linux-based Ubuntu distribution. A device running Ubuntu for Android loads Android during typical smartphone use cases, then switches to Ubuntu once its been slid into a dock that connects to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

iPad 3 set for March 7 launch?

Apple truly changed the way we looked at tablets with the release of their iPad, and I would safely venture out to say that the iPad proved to be the death knell for netbooks. After all, how many folks do you know still tote around netbooks with the tablet market growing so rapidly? Of course, the same can be said for the smartphone industry when Apples iPhone arrived back in 2007, rapidly changing the way we see multi-touch surfaces on a portable device.

Having said that, the iPad as well as its sequel, the iPad 2, proved to be quite the retail hit, helping Apple achieve record quarterly profits not to mention having their stock touch the $500 mark recently, marking a new high for Cupertino. Read more…

Vonage’s New Mobile Calling App Lets iPhone And Android Users Communicate For Free

Who doesn’t like free? Vonage, which is still around helping people who love home phones, is finally taking a serious leap into what’s next: mobile. The company just announced the new Vonage Mobile iPhone and Android app, which lets users make free high-definition calls and send free texts to all users of the app, worldwide. It works over Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G data networks. When calling those who have not yet downloaded the app, Vonage Mobile provides ultra low-cost international calling with per-minute rates that are on average 70 percent less than major mobile carriers and 30 percent less than Skype. Users can instantly add calling credit directly from the app through iTunes or Android Market in increments of $4.99 and $9.99.
