Servers: My place or yours?

It’s practically easier to have your DC in your basement, but strategically silly. If you don’t need physical servers, it’s time to decide if it’s better to locate the virtual servers outside your building.

From a practical standpoint, locating servers in your own data centres and offices would seem to be a good idea. You know exactly where your servers are, how they’re configured, the applications they’re running and how to get them fixed when things go wrong.

They’re also very clearly yours and under your direct control with no ifs or buts when it comes to who owns, not just the hardware and software, but the data and the intellectual property therein.

Nintendo Sued Over 3DS Screen Technology

Tomita Technologies has sued Nintendo over the glasses-free 3D technology for the Nintendo 3DS. Tomita claims that Nintendo has infringed on their patent that they filed in 2003 titled, “Stereoscopic Image Picking Up and Display System Based Upon Optical Axes Cross-Point Information” While not the easiest thing to understand, Tomita claims that their technology allows devices to display 3D images without glasses. This, of course, is the basis of Nintendo’s 3DS handheld gaming device. Founded by a former Sony engineer in 2002, Tomita had their patent approved in 2008, years before Nintendo released their 3DS.

Looks like it is a pretty cheap APU to get that includes a mid range graphics to pair up with a good A75 board.

Sandy Bridge-E platform pushed back yet again

A bit of sour news for those anticipating the release of Intel’s next-gen Sandy Bridge-E series (to replace the aging LGA-1366 core platform) that was originally said to be Q3, then delayed to Q4, and now as a reliable source has indicated, is looking to be more like Q1 of 2012.    VR-Zone has a possible reasoning behind why Intel keeps pushing back the launch, but it’s all only speculation at this time. The Sandy Bridge-E series units are based on the same core used in Intel’s upcoming LGA-2011 and LGA-1356 Xeon processors. As these chips are larger in size, it means fewer per wafer, so it could simply be a case of Intel making efforts to stock up on a good amount of these for its refreshed Xeon family before moving attention back onto the consumer market again. < Read more…
