AMD will not endorse SYSmark 2012 benchmark and resigned from BAPCo

UNNYVALE, CA, Jun 21, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) AMD AMD +4.50% today announced that it will not endorse the SYSmark 2012 Benchmark (SM2012), which is published by BAPCo (Business Applications Performance Corporation). Along with the withdrawal of support, AMD has resigned from the BAPCo organization.

Technology is evolving at an incredible pace, and customers need clear and reliable measurements to understand the expected performance and value of their systems, said Nigel Dessau, senior vice president and Chief Marketing Officer at AMD. AMD does not believe SM2012 achieves this objective.

ARM exec: Open standards will make us all rich

Fusion Summit ARM has joined forcing with AMD to promote what they call “heterogeneous computing”.

ARM Fellow and vice president of technology Jem Davies took the stage on Tuesday at AMD’s Fusion Developer Summit, insisting that the two chip designers share a vision of the computing future.

“It may seem strange that AMD have invited someone from ARM to come along and talk to you today about this…And, indeed, in some ways it is,” Davies told his keynote audience on Tuesday at the Summit in Bellevue, Washington. “[But] there is great agreement between ARM and AMD.

AMD A8-3850 Lynx Desktop APU Pictured – Socket FM1

AMD’s upcoming Llano desktop platform goes by the code name of Lynx and over the past couple weeks there are plenty of leaks and embargo breaks of this new processor. We recently got to take a look at a system running one of these processors and now have been able to hold one in our hands. Sure, we are going to honor AMD’s embargo and not talk about performance, but you can take a look at the processor below.

The AMD A3850 has four cores running at 2.9GHz and doesn’t support Turbo Core.

IBM guns down Neon’s mainframe accelerator in Texas

The hired legal guns were blazing, and when the smoke cleared, the US District Court for the Western District of Texas, located in Austin, granted a permanent injunction in favor of IBM in a long-running lawsuit Neon Enterprise Software, killing the controversial zPrime mainframe acceleration program.

The zPrime tool was launched in July 2009 in the middle of the Great Recession and a lull in System z mainframe sales as customers awaited the System zEnterprise 196 mainframes that came out a year later, when the economy recovered somewhat.
