Violin strings out fresh flash trio

Shared flash array supplier Violin Memory is announcing three new products, beefing up both the capacity and performance of its products.

The existing 3000 range consists of two 3U rackmount enclosures: the 3200 is a 10TB product offering 220,000 sustained write IOPS from its single-level cell (SLC) flash, while the 3140 is a 40TB capacity box using 2-bit multi-level cell (MLC) flash. That was what was available, up until yesterday anyway.

Now we have a 3220, boosting the SLC capacity to 20TB, 16 of which are usable.

Apple iPhone 5 to launch on 14 Oct 2011

Apple will launch its next-generation iPhone 5 in five initial markets on October 14th according to a new report from Macotakara. The site, which has a mixed track record, reports that Apple will release the new device in the United States, the U.K., Germany, Japan and France on that date, with launches in additional markets to follow. The date aligns closely with earlier comments from France Telecom CEO Stéphane Richard, who said the iPhone 5 would launch from Orange on October 15th, a Saturday. Apple launched the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS on Fridays, and the iPhone 4 launched on a Thursday last year.

Latest word is Sandy Bridge-E will arrive November 14

Ok, we’ve been hearing of a different launch date for Sandy Bridge E over what seems like every week in recent months, so this may be a bit of a case of the boy who cried wolf by now, but a new report from the folks over at VR-Zone looks to be a good deal closer to certainty than previous rumours, saying that new information reveals the first Sandy Bridge E processor to launch on November 14th.    This latest rumour also indicates that despite us being lead to believe for a while now that Intel’s own DX79SI and DX79TO motherboards would launch on the same said date as the processor(s), they won’t actually arrive until December. Rumor: Amazon Unveiling Android Powered Tablet PC on Wednesday

Amazon.com has slated a news conference for Wednesday, and media speculation focuses on the prospect that the Internet retailing major will unveil a tablet computer to compete with Apple Inc.’s market-dominating iPad. A new Kindle tablet would combine the retailer’s prominent electronic-book reader with connection to Amazon’s offerings of MP3 music and digital videos. And the media talk says the tablet will run on Google’s Android operating system, which means access to the Android applications at Amazon’s app store.
