LulzSec brings down League of Legends

It’s probably a complete coincidence that LulzSec targeted a game whose name abbreviates to LoL, but that doesn’t stop the fact that players have complained all day about being unable to log in to the game’s authentication servers and start playing. As of this writing, the League of Legends status page says the game servers are up and available to play, but the game’s forums are littered with posts and complaints from users who can’t log in.

LulzSec already noted on their Twitter account that they managed to bring the League of Legends authentication servers down, and commented on how amusing it is that so many players are so angry they can’t log in to the game.

Lawmakers Seek Limits on Location Data Use

Looks like Wednesday was location privacy day on Capitol Hill.

Two bills introduced in the House and Senate would limit how the government and private companies can use information about your location, the latest signs of growing concern among lawmakers. The bills are among multiple efforts in Washington to update digital-privacy laws, particularly as they relate to location.

Google rolls out +1 Button Internet-wide

A rival to Facebook’s “Like” button, Google’s new +1 Button is now available to any webmaster who wants to give the social sharing feature a go.

As expected, Google has begun the Internet-wide roll-out of its new +1 Button, a social sharing feature that rivals Facebook‘s “Like” button. The +1 Button is now available for all web publishers who wish to put the button on their website. And a number of news organizations, online retailers and other popular websites are already on board.

X-Men: When comic book movies stopped sucking

When the first X-Men movie was making a mad-dash rush to the finish line, everything was so top secret, trying to get any advance word on anything was impossible.

Fans were certainly trying to brace themselves for the worst, because previous comic book movies really missed the mark. (Actually more like couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn…)

Three days before the movie came out, I got invited to a screening by my good friend Erik Bauer, who was my editor at Creative Screenwriting magazine.

Alibaba CEO on Yahoo Deal: ‘It’s Complicated’

Jack Ma, the chief executive of Internet business Alibaba Goup Holding Ltd., said he expects his company to reach a settlement in a testy dispute with investor Yahoo Inc. and said his company faced little competition in the fast-growing Chinese market.

Alibaba, an online ecommerce market, and Yahoo have been at odds over the transfer of a key online payments subsidiary, Alipay, to a company controlled by Mr. Ma. The two sides disputed when Alibaba informed Yahoo of the move, which removed one of Alibaba’s most valuable units.
