Android captures 44% of US smartphone sales

Android continued its triumphant march forward during the third quarter of 2010 by capturing an impressive 44 percent of US consumer smartphone sales.

As expected, Android’s significant gains (11% since Q2) came at the expense of RIM and its corporate-oriented BlackBerry handset.

“Apple, Google and RIM have traded barbs over activations, apps, openness and other contentious topics; however, it’s all been more about positioning than prospering up to this point,” said senior NPD exec Ross Rubin.

“The reality in the US has been that all these companies have enjoyed the fruits of a booming smartphone market.

RIP, Sony Walkman. Vintage gadget officially retired

In 1979, Sony introduced a little device called the Walkman, a portable way to listen to audio cassette tapes. Today, 30 years and countless innovations later, all remaining threads on the Walkman’s lifeline in Japan have been cut.

Yes, Sony has decided to pull the plug on the gadget that first made it a household name in audio electronics. The company has sold more than 220 million Walkman units worldwide.

Today’s announcement marks the end of production for the device in Japan, the market where it was introduced and became the birthplace of today’s environment of portable music players.

12-year-old identifies Firefox security flaw, gets $3,000 reward

A 12-year-old professional bug hunter recently received a whopping $3,000 from Mozilla for identifying a critical Firefox security flaw.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Alex Miller – who is in seventh grade – stepped up his efforts to find the bug after the company increased its bounty payments from $500 to 3K. 

“A couple of months ago we [raised] the amount of payment to a much more substantial $3,000, basically to reflect the change in the economy, and the marketplace, since the time the program was initiated,” Mozilla spokesperson Brandon Sterne told the Mercury News.

At 2.9 pounds, the 13-inch Air is about 1.5 pounds lighter than the MacBook Pro with the same size display and it comes with a higher-resolution 1440 x 900 display.The 11-inch Air weighs just 2.3 pounds and goes with 1366 x 768 pixels.
