Intel and Nokia Ready Assault on Mobile 3D

Intel and Nokia have been sittin’ in a tree since February, when they agreed to cross-breed their mobile operating systems and form MeeGo. Now they’ve identified the next front in the mobile wars: 3D interfaces.

Today’s announcement of the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center doesn’t come with a lot of hard details about what’s to come, just the promise of “interfaces that are more similar to interactions in the real world” through 3D. That means a more immersive experience, like that pictured above, or a hologram of the person on the other end of the line popping up on your phone.

When we’ll see the fruits of those labors is an open-ended question; it’ll take several months just to staff up the lab.

Intel, Nokia Create Joint R&D Lab in Finland

Today in Oulu, Finland, Intel and Nokia launched the Joint Innovation Center, where the two companies will join forces to develop mobile technology focusing on user experience.

The latest branch of Intel’s European Research Network Intel Labs Europe, the lab–to be housed in the Center for Internet Excellence (seen on the right)–will employ about 24, and focus on the development of user interfaces for mobile devices.

HP disrupts Dell with a counter-offer for 3Par

3Par, which Dell had a $1.15bn agreement to buy, has received a counter-offer from HP.

On Monday, hardware and software giant HP, the world’s largest PC vendor, announced its offer to 3Par to acquire it for approximately $1.6bn (1.03bn) in cash, or $24 a share. On 16 August, Dell, the world’s third-largest PC vendor, had signed an agreement to acquire 3Par for $1.15bn, or $18 per share. HP’s offer places a 33-percent premium on Dell’s offer.

Google buys visual shopping engine Like.com

Google has acquired Like.com, which offers a visual search engine for retail products, a deal aimed at boosting Google’s shopping search capabilities and services like its Products engine.

The acquistion comes years after the first rumors emerged that Google was interested in buying Like.com, which was initially known as Riya when the company was founded in 2004.

Like.com CEO and co-founder Munjal Shah announced the deal on his company’s home page on Friday. “We see joining Google as a way to supersize our vision and supercharge our passion,” his note reads.

Using computer vision and machine learning technology, Like.com provides a visual search engine focused on shoes, clothes, jewelry and decor, according to the company.
