British ISP giving 3G coverage to rural areas for free

The plan highlights the difficulty in bringing broadband to rural areas.

Even in 2011, finding broadband Internet access in rural areas can be difficult. In rural America, 40 percent of homes either use dialup or have no Internet access at all, a figure thats ten percent higher than in urban areas. 

In the U.K., mobile carrier Three has decided to help change that. The firm has decided to give free 3G access to communities around the nation.

This silent movie is a making a big buzz

There is a lot of buzz about The Artist, an upcoming movie depicting the life of a silent film star who worries about the advent of sound.



The movie, starring John Goodman and Malcolm McDowell, could help bring indies back to the Academy Awards in a big way- with a little help from Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and other smaller films.

The big twist with the film is that it’s actually a silent movie. The film is also apparently shot in black and white, which is also fairly daring in this day and age, because many moviegoers of this generation have never seen a black and white movie. (Studio

Portal: No Escape Short Film by Dan Trachtenberg

Director Dan Trachtenberg put together an impressive seven minute film based on the Portal video game series with the help of composer Mike Zarin and actor Danielle Rayne. The short was original shown at San Diego Comic-Con, but has now managed to find its way online in 1080p and it looks and sounds great.

Eyeborg filmmaker and Square Enix document state-of-the-art prosthetics

How much of what you see do you commit to memory? What if you could record it? Filmmaker Rob Spence outfitted his right eye socket with a prosthetic webcam-eye back in 2009 following a shotgun accident six years ago. Spence recently turned his eye on, and partnered with Square Enix to document state-of-the-art prosthetics.

Samsung refuses to buy HP’s PC business

Samsung made it clear today that it is not interested in buying HP’s PC business, despite market rumours to the contrary.

Not usually so chatty about such speculations, Samsung released a statement from its chief executive, Choi Gee-Sung, denying any thoughts of picking up the unit, which Hewlett-Packard said last week it may “spin off”.

“To put to rest any speculation on this issue, I would like to definitively state that Samsung Electronics will not acquire Hewlett-Packard’s PC Business,” Choi said.

“Hewlett-Packard is the global leader in the PC business with sales of 40 million units last year, while Samsung is an emerging player in the category and sold about 10 million units in 2010. B
