Gamestop apologizes for Deux Ex-gate

Gamestop has apologized in an email for it’s actions this past week. Gamestop opened the retail packing for the PC version of the newly released game Deus Ex: Human Revolution and removed a coupon for Onlive PC game service, and still sold the game as “new”. Onlive happens to be a competitor of Gamestop.

“Earlier this week, GameStop removed a competitor’s coupon from standard edition PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a recent release by Square Enix. We were not aware that the product box would contain this competitor’s offer.

App Watch: An iPad App for Board Members

With its new iPad app for company boards, NASDAQ is hoping to capitalize on the popularity of the device among its executive clients.

A new iPad app being released on Monday for NASDAQ’s “Directors Desk” online service aims to help board members keep on top of their duties both in the board room and on the go using the popular device. The app will be free to download, but requires a subscription to the Director’s Desk service in order to work.

IT security rundown for week ending Aug. 26

This past week in security news was highlighted by a hacking revelation out of China, bad news for banks, good news for Sony gaming customers and a curious email that might have been at the heart of the big RSA data breach.

So it turns out the Chinese government, despite protests to the contrary, has been hacking U.S. targets after all. How do we know? Because Chinese state television broadcast a documentary about hacking and cyberwarfare strategy that showed a demo of a state-sponsored hacking tool purportedly disrupting the operations of a spiritual movement called the Falun Gong, which the Chinese government considers a threat to its authority.

HP discontinues operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones

PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug 18, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE)

HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced financial results for its third fiscal quarter ended July 31, 2011, as well as the commencement of a company transformation described in detail in separate press releases issued today.

HP unveiled the details of a plan to accelerate the strategy introduced in March. The plan introduced today will:

Move HP into higher value, higher margin growth categories
Sharpen HPs focus on its strategic priorities of cloud, solutions and software with an emphasis on enterprise, commercial and government markets
Increase investment in innovation to drive differentiation

As part of the transformation, HP announced that its board of directors has authorized the exploration of strategic alternatives for the companys Personal Systems Group.

Walk and Talk For Hours Using Shoe Power

Taking the stairs could mean more time between charges for your phone.

Researchers at University of Wisconsin at Madison have developed a shoe insert that uses the impact of your strides to generate electricity for your phone. The prototype footwear-embedded harvester consists of two pouches filled with nanoparticle liquid metal called galinstan. It generates electrical current as it is forced through narrow channels, a process the researchers call reverse electrowetting. Power is stored in a battery in the arch of the shoe.

Other kinetic energy harvesters use piezoelectrics, which feature crystal sheets that polarize and produce energy through movement.
