Vonage’s New Mobile Calling App Lets iPhone And Android Users Communicate For Free

Who doesn’t like free? Vonage, which is still around helping people who love home phones, is finally taking a serious leap into what’s next: mobile. The company just announced the new Vonage Mobile iPhone and Android app, which lets users make free high-definition calls and send free texts to all users of the app, worldwide. It works over Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G data networks. When calling those who have not yet downloaded the app, Vonage Mobile provides ultra low-cost international calling with per-minute rates that are on average 70 percent less than major mobile carriers and 30 percent less than Skype. Users can instantly add calling credit directly from the app through iTunes or Android Market in increments of $4.99 and $9.99.

VMworld: Silver Peak offers WAN optimization for free

At VMworld this week Silver Peak Systems is introducing a free version of its WAN optimization software for virtual environments as well as an upgrade to its flagship virtual WAN appliance designed for data centers.

The free VX Express (VX-X) software is limited compared to paid versions of Silver Peak products. It only supports connecting one site to one other site, has no management platform and is ineligible for maintenance, the company says.

Google Brings Voice to Gmail With Free Calls

Google just shattered the pay wall between VoIP and telephones, letting Gmail users make free voice calls to the United States and Canada.

Google promises that phone calls will remain free “for at least the rest of the year,” while calls to other countries start at $0.02 per minute. The voice service for Gmail will roll out to users over the next few days. To get started using the service you will have to install the free “voice and video chat” Web-based service to you Gmail account here.

Here’s how it works: First, you’ll need Google’s Voice and Video plug-in. Within Gmail’s “Chat” window, a “Call phone” option will appear. Up pops a little number pad, on which you can dial the phone you’d like to call.
