On Wednesday, VIA Technologies and WTI announced that the two have reached an agreement to sell holdings in S3 Graphics to HTC for $300 million. S3 Graphics builds hardware graphics solutions for a number of consumer devices including game consoles, PCs, and mobile devices. VIA will receive $147 million from the deal while WTI will take home $153 million. “The transaction would allow VIA to monetize a portion of its rich IP portfolio, yet retain its graphics capabilities to support the development and sale of its processors and chipsets,” said Tzu-mu Lin, Senior Vice President and Board Director of VIA. Pioneer Australia may offer its 11.6 inch ultraportable laptop called DreamBook Lite U11a with a discrete graphics processor. The only version of this laptop available at the moment has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor and GMA 3150 integrated graphics. The product page, however, mentions two additional options:
* 1.83GHz Intel Atom N470 CPU
* Discrete graphic N11x
Intel is yet to officially announce its Atom N470 processor and no netbooks available at the moment sport this CPU. The Intel Atom Pine Trail chips are due to be released on January 11. These chips have processor, graphics and memory functions integrated into a single chip. Pine Trail processors are meant to reduce power consumption. They are unlikely to give a performance boost. But in 2011 or so, Intel plans to launch yet another line of processors code-named Cedar Trail. According to sources, the Cedar Trail processors will considerably improve the overall performance of the laptop.
The Cedar Trail chips will be based on the 32nm process, the Pine Trail processors, on the other hand, are based on the 45nm process. Read more…
