China now has over half a billion Internet users

According to the China Internet Network Information Center, at the end of 2012 the population of China with access to the Internet had surpassed the half a billion mark. In total, some 513 million people now access the web in some form across China.

Even so, Chinas uptake of the Internet is well below the U.S. and its only the sheer number of people there that makes the half a billion figure possible. Internet penetration in the U.S. has reached 78.2%, where as China only enjoys 38.3 percent.

Google Tests Ultra-Fast Fiber Internet Service – Fastest in the World

Google’s Fiber internet service has been turned on in a neighborhood just south of the Stanford University campus and first reports are that the internet service is nothing short of amazing. Download speeds on the network were up to 300 Mbps, with an upload speed of 150 Mbps. Kansas City is the only other place to receive Google Fiber. It’s part of a grand experiment involving as many as half a million homes to improve ways to build the network, see what apps people might invent and how it would change people’s lives. UK.gov ‘HyperHighway’ aims to ‘speed up the internet by 100x’

The UK government says it hopes to “make the internet 100 times faster” by kicking off a £7.2m research project dubbed “Photonics HyperHighway”.

David Willetts, minister for universities and science, announced the scheme during a speech at Southampton uni earlier today.

First look: Sony Internet TV with Google TV

Tonight, at a New York City launch event, Sony unveiled their Internet TV products. They are powered by Google TV, just like Logitech’s Revue, and come in two different versions. There are four televisions ranging from $599 to $1399 and in 24-, 32-, 40-, and 46-inch sizes. The other option is a Blu-ray player that will sell for $399.
