Toshiba recalls 41,000 laptops

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of 41,000 Toshiba laptops after reports of some overheating and even melting.

Toshiba posted its own recall of several models of its Satellite T130 laptops on its product support forums last week. A full list of affected models can be found on Toshiba’s web site.

The CPSC said on Thursday that 129 instances of “overheating and deforming the plastic casing area around the AC adapter plug” had been reported. Two of those reports resulted in “minor burn injuries that did not require medical attention” and two in minor property damage.

Lenovo’s New G-Series Laptops


Last week, Lenovo announced two new additions to its G-Series family of laptops. The budget laptops are powerful with a AMD Turion II Dual-Core processors integrated ATI Radeon HD graphics. Both the G455 and G555 have 16:9 widescreen HD displays, come with Windows 7, and support DirectX 10. They also feature a few favorite Lenovo applications, including OneKey Rescue System, VeriFace face recognition for security, Energy Management 5.0 software for efficiency, and a repair and recovery tool among others.

Both laptops will be available in the United States in March and will start around $449. Read more…

ASUS ANNOUNCES UL-SERIES OF THIN AND LIGHT LAPTOPS

Asus has announced the release of its UL-series of thin and light laptops which will use Asus’ Turbo 33 technology. Asus claims that the Turbo 33 technology will improve the processing power by 30% while at the same time extending the battery life to up to 12 hours.

The notebooks in this series will feature an aluminum chassis and weigh around 3 pounds. They will be powered by a low voltage Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor clocking at 1.3 GHz. They are also expected to have a Nvidia Geforce 210M discrete GPU with 512 MB memory. < Read more…

Samsung to Introduce Two New CULV Laptops

Samsung is expected to announce two new CULV based laptops soon, the X420 and X520. The laptops will be based on an ultra-thin design with high battery life.

The Samsung X420 is based on Intel’s Pentium Dual Core SU2700 1.30 GHz processor, with a 250GB 5400RPM hard drive and 3GB DDR3 RAM. However, an optical drive is not included. It’s equipped with a 14-inch screen and weighs 3.7 pounds. The Samsung X520 will be equipped with a similar SU2700 CPU which consumes ultra low power along with a 320GB hard drive and 4GB DDR3 memory. The X520 comes with a 15.6-inch display and weighs around 4.6 pounds. Both laptops include integrated Intel GMA X4500M cards.

Apple MacBooks laptops

An entire line of revamped MacBook laptops are waiting to be launched. They are feature-rich, but still lack in some areas. Here are a few features we would like to see in MacBooks.

Matte screens
Most laptop buyers love matte, non-glossy screens, but Apple MacBooks don’t have them. The MacBook Pro do offer a matte option, but that is in the form of an anti-glare coating add-on costing $50.

Blu-ray drives
Many notebooks in the price range of MacBook include Blu-ray by default, but MacBooks don’t have them. Since MacBook is multi-media friendly adding a Blu-ray drive will only add to its value.

Mobile broadband options
