Amazon Appstore updated to 2.3

If you prefer skirting the Play Store with Amazon’s alternative, you may be glad to know that the Appstore’s latest version now allows users to download applications up to 50MB in size over their mobile data connection — a significant increase from the previous 20MB limitation. Read more…

Option’s XYFI Is Planet’s Smallest 3G + Wi-Fi Mobile Hotspot

MiFis and mobile hotspots are small, but they aren’t tiny. Yet. Option is aiming to redefine how a wireless hotspot / router should look, by introducing the smallest one you’ve ever seen. The XYFI is indeed hailed as the world’s tiniest mobile hotspot, offering Wi-Fi signals to up to eight devices. In addition to connecting to cellular networks to share Wi-Fi, XYFI also connects to WiFi presenting the user as a hub to connectivity and providing carriers with significant Wi-Fi offload benefits. Vonage’s New Mobile Calling App Lets iPhone And Android Users Communicate For Free

Who doesn’t like free? Vonage, which is still around helping people who love home phones, is finally taking a serious leap into what’s next: mobile. The company just announced the new Vonage Mobile iPhone and Android app, which lets users make free high-definition calls and send free texts to all users of the app, worldwide. It works over Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G data networks. When calling those who have not yet downloaded the app, Vonage Mobile provides ultra low-cost international calling with per-minute rates that are on average 70 percent less than major mobile carriers and 30 percent less than Skype. Users can instantly add calling credit directly from the app through iTunes or Android Market in increments of $4.99 and $9.99.

Intel and Nokia Ready Assault on Mobile 3D

Intel and Nokia have been sittin’ in a tree since February, when they agreed to cross-breed their mobile operating systems and form MeeGo. Now they’ve identified the next front in the mobile wars: 3D interfaces.

Today’s announcement of the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center doesn’t come with a lot of hard details about what’s to come, just the promise of “interfaces that are more similar to interactions in the real world” through 3D. That means a more immersive experience, like that pictured above, or a hologram of the person on the other end of the line popping up on your phone.

When we’ll see the fruits of those labors is an open-ended question; it’ll take several months just to staff up the lab.
