Android smartphones are selling like crazy. Android tablets, not so much.
Google wants to change that. Google plans on selling Google-branded tablets directly to customers from their own online store, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Initially, The Journal says, the tablets would be built in partnership with manufacturers Asus and Samsung. Motorola-built Google-branded tablets will eventually hit the online store as well.
According to The Journals people familiar with the matter, the store could go live later this year.
This isnt Googles first time selling hardware online.
Mouse Computer Japan has announced the new LuvPad WN701, a ruggedized tablet that is splash-proof and shockproof plus it comes pre-installed with Windows 7 OS. The tablet comes with IP44 certification, meaning it has the ability withstand water splashes and will also survive a 70cm drop, which should be enough protection if it accidentally falls out your lap.
Microsoft have of course, not commented on the story, but considering Windows 8 is going from strength to strength, it is not that out of the question. Microsoft also said during TechEd that there are quad-core, Windows 7-based slates coming later this year which are set to sport a 10-inch HD screen, be capable of 1080p playback and have an impressive eight hours of battery life. <
