Google Reportedly Targets Amazon and Apple With Online Tablet Store

Android smartphones are selling like crazy. Android tablets, not so much.

Google wants to change that. Google plans on selling Google-branded tablets directly to customers from their own online store, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Initially, The Journal says, the tablets would be built in partnership with manufacturers Asus and Samsung. Motorola-built Google-branded tablets will eventually hit the online store as well.

According to The Journals people familiar with the matter, the store could go live later this year.

This isnt Googles first time selling hardware online.

Rumor: Amazon Unveiling Android Powered Tablet PC on Wednesday

Amazon.com has slated a news conference for Wednesday, and media speculation focuses on the prospect that the Internet retailing major will unveil a tablet computer to compete with Apple Inc.’s market-dominating iPad. A new Kindle tablet would combine the retailer’s prominent electronic-book reader with connection to Amazon’s offerings of MP3 music and digital videos. And the media talk says the tablet will run on Google’s Android operating system, which means access to the Android applications at Amazon’s app store. Microsoft possibly showing off quad-core Windows-based tablet at TechEd

Microsoft have possibly shown off a Windows 8-based tablet at TechEd with a report from IT consultant Alan Burchill, an attendant at Tech Ed in New Zealand. Burchill says that Microsoft would be giving out these tablets to attendees at an “upcoming Microsoft event,” but since the news has gone live, it has disappeared unfortunately.    Microsoft have of course, not commented on the story, but considering Windows 8 is going from strength to strength, it is not that out of the question. Microsoft also said during TechEd that there are quad-core, Windows 7-based slates coming later this year which are set to sport a 10-inch HD screen, be capable of 1080p playback and have an impressive eight hours of battery life. < Read more…

Toshiba Thrive successor leaks suggest an ultraslim Android tablet announced at IFA

Back in July, we reviewed the Toshiba Thrive tablet. Reviewer Russel Holly said the tablet was great for actually getting stuff done, instead of just using it for entertainment purposes like most other tablets. The tablet, thanks to features like a USB port and full-sized HDMI, is more like a keyboard-less computer than anything else. And, at just $480, it was priced well under the iPad 2.
